Missional Urban Ministry Team

In order to pursue the goals of our Urban Ministry Strategy paper (2005) the Presbytery established a team to integrate missional concepts into our urban ministry initiatives. The work of the team has combined building awareness within the Presbytery as a whole about congregations that have engaged in community ministries in a distinctly missional way as well as encouraging emerging ministries that bring members of the church into new relationships with their neighbors. Part of this effort has resulted in a collaborative conversation among four inner-city African American congregations based on combining the insights of Asset Based Community Development with an understanding of the transformative power of Jesus Christ in all of our lives. In all of this the Presbytery is working with its congregations to discern what God is already doing in our communities and with whom we are being called to build new relationships for the sake of the Gospel.

Urban Ministry Strategy Paper (2005)

In 2004 the Council of the Presbytery of Philadelphia appointed a Task Force to draft an Urban Ministry Strategy. This Task Force reported back to the Council in 2005 and their findings were referred to the group that was writing the Presbytery’s new Missional Plan. Some parts of the Strategy were incorporated into the Missional Plan adopted later that year. The Missional Urban Ministry Team is seeking to put into action other parts of the Urban Ministry Strategy.
