Jesus said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. John 21:6
John’s Gospel tells us that the disciples spent a night fishing without catching much. But then the Risen Christ appears and tells the disciples to try casting the nets on the other side of their boat. This results in an abundant catch, so much that the disciples could barely haul it in.
Just like he did with his fisherman-disciples so many years ago, Jesus invites us to do the challenging work of ministry in new ways. We do not move locations from where we are. We do not stop the work altogether. We simply – and not so simply – use new tools, new ideas, new methods, new energy to do Christ’s work in this ever changing world. Only Christ can tell us where to fish, but we ought to be well equipped when we hear the call. And if we are like the disciples, casting our nets in new directions, the Covenant Fund seeks to provide new nets for us to use.
Applications for 2015 Covenant Fund Grants will be available Spring of 2015 from the Presbytery office. Covenant Fund grants are intended to seed and undergird creative ministry initiatives, helping congregations and communities cast new nets in new directions. These grant funds are designed to provide financial resources for ministry and mission initiatives that invite risk and imagination, serve the needs and hopes of a congregation’s neighbors, and foster collaboration and partnership.
Successful Covenant Fund applications will show an understanding of how the world and church is changing and how their initiatives will cultivate partnership with other congregations or community groups. Please contact [email protected] if you have questions, or require additional information.
Begin now praying and dreaming about the ways a Covenant Fund 2014 grant could be used to help your congregation cast new nets in new directions.
