Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
“Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I; send me!”
Isaiah 6:8 (NRSV)
The General Assembly consists of commissioners elected by presbyteries. Half of the commissioners will be ruling elders, half will be teaching elders. Individual commissioners are assigned to serve on one of the Committees of the Assembly.
The 222nd General Assembly will be held at the Convention Center in Portland Oregon.
The Presbytery of Philadelphia will send a delegation made up of the following:
- 4 Ruling Elder Commissioners*
- 4 Teaching Elder Commissioners*
- 1 Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD) – must be 17-23 years of age
Together they review the work of synods, review and seek to resolve controversies in the church, and are responsible for matters of common concern to the whole church. They affirm and celebrate new ministry initiatives and serve as a symbol of unity for the church. As a gathered assembly they “seek together to find and represent the will of Christ” (Book of Order F-3.0204). Recommended actions requiring a change in the PC(USA) Constitution (Book of Order and Book of Confessions) get forwarded to the 171 presbyteries for their considered approval.
