Old Pine Celebrates 250 Years with Speaker Series

Speaker Series Celebrates the 250th Anniversary of Old Pine Street Church

Founded in 1768, Old Pine Street Church (“Old PINE”) was known as “The Church of the Patriots” during the American Revolution. A congregation of the Presbyterian Church USA, today Old Pine is an inclusive, vibrant, historic, and mission-centered congregation celebrating its past and moving forward in faith. To commemorate its 250th Anniversary, Old Pine is holding a distinguished speaker series with topics that are both timely and engaging.

Faith & War (November 5, 2017)
All are invited to hear Dr. William Harrison Taylor, associate professor of history at Alabama State University, who will explore the Presbyterian Church’s role in the America Revolution in his presentation: “Faith & War: American Presbyterians and the War for Independence.” Drawing from his scholarship in religious history, Dr. Taylor provides a view into the impact the early American Presbyterian church had on our nations’ struggle for independence and how this in turn helped shape the denomination’s developing nationalist spirit.  Click here with flyer to share with your congregation.

Faith & Immigration (March 4, 2018)
Dr. Daisy Machado, Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary, will address the role of Christianity in “Faith & Immigration”. Dr. Machado will examine how Christianity can offer an alternative way of thinking and talking about immigration that can lift up Christianity’s long held vision of a common humanity as it also calls Christians to boldly embrace the claims of faith to seek justice for all.

Faith & Politics (May 6, 2018)
The series concludes with a panel discussion of how faith intersects with local and national politics. During “Faith & Politics”, panelists Dr. Ron Sider, Professor at Palmer Theological Seminary, and Dr. Wilson J Goode, former mayor of Philadelphia and president of Amachi, Inc., will guide our exploration of the role faith has in how we approach the political landscape.

All events are open to the public free of charge, these events take place on Sundays at 1:00 pm at Old Pine Street Church, 412 Pine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. Childcare is provided.

CALLING UPON THE GIFTS  OF THE BODY OF CHRIST

Pentecost Offering 2017: Investing in Our Greatest Resource

PENTECOST OFFERING: INVESTING IN OUR GREATEST RESOURCE

WHEN IS THE PENTECOST OFFERING RECEIVED? The Pentecost Offering is traditionally received on the day of Pentecost. However, you can help sustain the important PC(USA) ministries and programs that are supported by the Pentecost Offering by making a gift at any time throughout the year. Donations can be made online or by mailing a check care of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to P.O. Box 643700; Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700.

HOW IS MY GIFT USED? A gift to the Pentecost Offering helps the church encourage, develop, and support its young people, and also address the needs of at-risk children. 40% of the Pentecost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used to support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency:

The Church Has Left the Building Transforms Lives and Congregations

In 2010, Woodside Presbyterian Church in Yardley began a movement that engages all ages in projects that bless local communities.  Since then, in one single day, those who participate in “The Church Has Left the Building,” stock pantries, deliver books to inner-city-school libraries, clean up the environment, lead worship for people in recovery, make meals for the home-bound, build shelters for the homeless, sew dresses for Haiti, and so much more. Woodside Pastor Doug Hoagland says, “The church is a sleeping giant. On this day you literally see it wake up and get to work!” In the evening Christians from different denominations gather together for worship in various places. It truly is a taste of heaven.

The day is really the culmination of several weeks of prayer, Bible reading, sermons, and small-group Bible studies. As we read about Jesus and the apostles loving the lost and healing the hurting, momentum builds toward the day when we go out and follow in his steps

In one day countless Christians of all ages leave their buildings and bless their communities through numerous mission projects. It’s simple. It works. It’s truly free.

This year our theme is LAUNCH based on the Gospel of Matthew and the Sermon on the Mount. Your people will read, study, and hear sermons from Matthew that prepare them to go out and live like Jesus. You choose the day and the way you want to serve.

The key is building momentum over the six weeks leading up to the Sunday when you serve. To do this we give you Logos, Bible study materials, Sermons, Devotional guides, Worship suggestions, Mission ideas, and brief training videos for your leaders. They are available for you to download, customize and use. There is no charge. Just click here for resources.

Spring is the best time to start planning. If you have questions – please contact Rev. Doug Hoglund: doug@woodside-church.org
