About Coming to the Table by Claire Jones

Shirley Erena Murray’s 1998 hymn, “For Everyone Born” (Words © 1998 Hope Publishing Company, 380 S Main Pl, Carol Stream, IL 60188) reminds us that “For everyone born, a place at the table…and God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace…” While the hymn ultimately leads us to the “chalice of grace” at the Lord’s Table, its verses bring home the many levels at which the table is for all humankind, the center of family and community: a safe and brave space for sharing all aspects of life, a place for listening, and a time-out from the struggles and stresses of our daily lives, to reflect and grow.

For the past five years, a small but steadfast core group of members of the Presbytery of Philadelphia, its congregations and friends has been living out God’s invitation to become “creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace” through a powerful initiative, Coming To The Table (CTTT.) CTTT came into being in 2006 when after years of genealogic research and reaching out across the barriers of “race” and hurt and distrust, “two dozen descendants from both sides of the system of enslavement gathered at the table.” https://comingtothetable.org/about-us/

From this meeting came the vision “of a just and truthful society that acknowledges and seeks to heal from the racial wounds of the past—from slavery and the many forms of racism it spawned,” and mission to provide “leadership, resources, and a supportive environment for all who wish to acknowledge and heal wounds from racism that is rooted in the United States’ history of slavery.”

Our local group offers a moderated discussion encouraging participants to share experiences and listen to other voices without fear of criticism or contradiction. This deepens our mutual understanding as we work for a just and truthful society.  We also attempt to address current concerns; most recently, we’ve had conversations on police profiling and “defunding,” critical race theory, and reparations.  You may visit the CTT website https://comingtothetable.org to learn more, but why not come to our “table”—in-person, or by Zoom, and experience this unique time together for yourself!
