13th: From Slave to Criminal with One Amendment

The Northwest Region hosts a series of conversations on race, beginning on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 9:30 am with coffee, registration and fellowship. The first event will be held on the second floor of Summit Presbyterian Church. The program will begin at 10:00 am. Please RSVP by filling out the form below.

The NW continues it’s commitment to “Coming to the Table,” hosting conversations about race with a three-part session around filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s 13th. Titled after the 13th amendment, which prohibited slavery.  With the exception of slavery as punishment for a crime, the film explores the intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States.

We will watch the 2nd and 3rd parts of the documentary on October 20th and November 17th, and in those months we will be returning to First Presbyterian Church of Germantown. The next two sessions:

  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

We will maintain our Coming to the Table format to enable personal sharing, listening and connection, while addressing one of their goals:  “Uncovering History: researching, acknowledging, and sharing personal, family, community, state, and national histories of race with openness and honesty.”
Directions and Parking: Summit is the large stone church on the corner, one block up from Lincoln Drive, on the corner of Westview. You can enter through the door on Westview (up the ramp or the large staircase), and walk through the gym. You may also enter across the lawn on Greene St., and go up one flight. There will be signs! Also, there are no meters or parking lot but parking is somewhat tight. There are usually spaces between Westview and Sherman, or at Carpenter and Greene in the Henry School parking lot. Or park near the bottom of Greene for some exercise!
