I write this brief reflection while navigating my final meeting as a trustee of the Presbyterian Foundation. I find myself at a personal liminal space – as I spiritually prepare for my role – along with eight others – as a commissioner elected to consider the concerns and issues coming before the 225th General Assembly meeting. This is a historic hybrid model over a three-week time frame with a foundational in-person component in Louisville, KY. A special thank you to Betsi Moise for her creative depiction of our delegation – we are off to the races.

On a more personal note, I am feeling the spiritual energy that is present when one finds themselves in a liminal space – as I await Saturday’s deliberation and election, trusting that it will be God’s spirit that will prevail. Thank you to the entire presbytery, Leadership Collegium, staff and the discernment team for the support and encouragement extended me and Shavon during this season. Shavon and I both find ourselves in a place of peace, grateful to be in the room – bringing our voices of conviction and hope to this Assembly. (Learn more about Ruth and Shavon’s platform here.)

Please pray for this Assembly. There are many serious issues that will be prayerfully considered, discussed and decided as we discern the heart and will of Christ for the church for a time such as this. There will be much business considered as there is much going on in the world and in our nation that calls the church to speak. Among some of the concerns anticipated are: gun violence in our nation; war abroad; racism and growing anti-Semitism, islamophobia; questions of equity with regards to the LGBTQ+ and trans-community; climate care and the recommendations to divest from five fossil fuel companies that have either refused to engage in any conversation or has not demonstrated any improvement in their policies. In addition it is likely there will be concerns raised regarding reproductive health and rights.

There will also be reports and recommendations on how we might proceed with the future organizational structure of the Presbyterian Mission Agency and the Office of General Assembly, including the possible formation of an Administrative Commission to bring those two agencies together. There will also be conversations on how to proceed with the 226th General Assembly scheduled to meet in Salt Lake City, UT.

It is clear that much thoughtful work has gone into the planning of this hybrid model – we’ll report out during the assembly deliberations. Prayers coveted as we acknowledge the laments of this season – even as we boldly dare to lean into the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “Unbounded we thrive!”
