The Presbytery of Philadelphia has received multiple inquiries seeking advice and/or counsel regarding the presence of firearms on church property. We encourage each church to discuss how the presence of firearms impacts their community and worship experiences. The responses and approaches may be varied but the goal should be the same: to provide a safe space, responsibly and respectfully, for teaching and learning the Gospel lessons of love and compassion for God and neighbor.
Each session is responsible for determining how best to proceed in developing policies and procedures on this or any matter in ways they believe best incarnate their understanding of Gospel values in their context.
Furthermore, the presbytery recommends participation in active shooter or other similar preparedness training. Our insurer, Church Mutual, endorses the ALICE training program and there is a link below for more information. You will also find resources our denomination provides that can guide your leadership’s discussions and discernment.
