Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD)

Carolyn Purdy (Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church)

Carolyn Purdy of Lansdale, PA, is a senior Psychology student at Wilkes University. In college, she has been involved in the Honors Program, the Wilkes Dance Team as a captain, and Wilkes Adventure Education (WAE) program as a student coordinator. During her time at Wilkes, Carolyn has had the opportunity to adventure with WAE; most notably through belaying on the high ropes course and leading backpacking trips across the US. Her experience there helped her obtain a job in Montana last summer at an oncology camp as a Lifeguard and High Ropes Director. This sense of adventure was not just nurtured by her immediate family, but through her church family too. They taught Carolyn that “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength;” that God’s love and faith is not experienced by just sitting on the couch but by going out of one’s comfort zone. The 11 summers she spent attending Kirkwood Camp also helped her take a ‘leap of faith’ through adventure.

The General Assembly (GA) is the largest expression of interconnectedness as Presbyterians. In addition to multiple opportunities to experience worship reflecting the diversity of who we are, GA is the embodiment of the value most distinct to our identity. Commissioners from all of our presbyteries discern and decide the sense of the Holy Spirit for the faithful witness of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in matters of common concern to the Church.

Our 3 elder commissioners, 3 minister commissioners, and 1 Young Adult Advisory Delegate have been assigned to one of the committees of the Assembly. These Committees make recommendations to the plenary on everything from the denomination’s structure and day-to-day governance to controversial issues in Church and culture throughout the world.
